We started growing heirloom tomatoes in our greenhouse in 2001. It started innocently enough—about 5 varieties, 20 plants each—but then it became a bit of an obsession. At one point I had over 50 varieties in trays that held 100 seedlings—do the math . . . ri-dic-u-lous! Our greenhouse is about 500 square feet, tiny by farmer standards, so the tomatoes are started in the greenhouse before we move them out to the horses’ riding ring, where they are staked in pots on the sand—a perfect growing environment, as it turns out! A sweet & spicy blend, using tomatoes at their peak! Just enough heat to fancy up your cheese board or spooned over halibut.
